Project Safe Point is a a prevention service which has three components: • Syringe exchange – A mobile van parks in area neighborhoods on a set schedule to conduct street outreach and prevention education and exchange used for new syringes and risk reduction supplies. Services on the vehicle also include HIV/STD/Hepatitis screening and testing, plus recovery readiness services. • Access to syringes and prevention materials – Staff work with area provider agencies to distribute vouchers to individuals who are using syringes for illegal drugs, insulin, hormones, steroids or other medications. The vouchers may be redeemed at designated pharmacies to obtain 10 free syringes along with HIV-prevention materials and information. • Access to disposal sites - The agency works with Centro Civico of Amsterdam’s Project Needle Smart to identify opportunities for the safe collection of used needles/syringes in the community and supervises disposal units at several locations. Call the Administrative Office to inquire as to the schedule and location of syringe exchange services, location of disposal sites, OR agencies who may distribute syringe vouchers.
