Linguistics Services Program |

Catholic Charities AIDS Services has launched of a new interpretation service for individuals with HIV/AIDS and limited English proficiency.
The new Linguistics Program is now offered to assist those infected with HIV/AIDS who have limited English proficiency. Interpreters trained by the Multicultural Association for Medical Interpreters (MAMI Inc.) will meet participants at medical, mental health and substance abuse treatment appointments to assist with communication, written material translation, to increase understanding of their disease and the complexities of treatment.
Angela Keller, Executive Director of Catholic Charities AIDS Services, comments “Imagine how difficult it is to understand medical diagnoses and the treatment advice your doctor may give you. Now imagine trying to hear that information when you do not speak English. Our new linguistics program will open doors empowering non-English speaking individuals to be a more active participant in their own care.”
Individuals may request interpretation appointments through case management or care coordination agencies that are registered with the program. Interpretation may be provided for individuals living in or having appointments in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Fulton or Montgomery Counties. Services are free to participants.
